I was going to mow the lawn, but both mowers are broken. The belt that
drives the blades snapped on one. The other simply will not start.

ARG!

Yoursel' - lack of maintenance, perhaps ???
In reality, the big one, the one that had the belt snap, is a
result of a lack of maintenance. It hasn't been in the shop for so
much as a blade sharpening in at least seven years.
The smaller one is a mystery. The battery is fairly new, so that
it's likely to be the problem.
Looks like both will be going in for some work.
